The concept of utilising volunteers within the extended police family is not a new one, what is a new innovation however, is the introduction by HANWaG, working in partnership with the community and Humberside Police, of a series of Accredited training courses designed to equip the volunteers with the skills and abilities to provide a high quality of service to the community within their Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) Stations. There are approximately 36 NPT's located throughout the Humberside Police region. some of these NPT's are already open whereas a number a currently in the process of being built. A large number of the currently open NPT's do not have front counter/enquiry offices open to the public. It is the aim of the scheme to staff these NPT's with 'Accredited Police Volunteers' in order that they may be opened to the public at agreed times on a roster basis. These are the first such courses of their kind within the UK and have generated a great deal of interest from a variety of government departments, Police services and other interested parties. An extract from 'Family Planning - by Chief Inspector Don Crabtree of the Government Office for Yorkshire and Humber: 'HANWaG has no (8.11.04) received notification of its successful outcome of a recent submission for an ASET Centre License. if seen through, this programme has the potential to set the national standard for recruiting, training, deploying and supporting Police Volunteers.' The initial course will qualify successful volunteers as an 'Accredited Police Volunteer'. This will authorise them to staff the front desk/enquiry office at their NPT. Once qualified to this level, volunteers may then apply to go onto the second level training as an 'Accredited Police Volunteer Co-ordinator'. This will see those successful volunteers acting as an intelligence conduit between members of their local HANWaG Neighbourhood Watch Groups and the Police Intelligence Departments. Finally, after being awarded level 1 and 2 training awards they may then apply to be considered for selection to train and qualify as a 'Volunteer Co-ordinator Manager'. This Manager will have joint responsibility, along with a relevant Volunteer Support Officer for a number of individual Local Partnership Team's within a NPT. Newly trained Volunteers will have the support of the Volunteer Support Officers in order that they receive 'on the job' familiarisation training in their new and exciting role.
