As
most people are aware, irresponsible disposal of electrical equipment can pose a
threat to our environment but did you know that 125 thousand tonnes of
electronic waste is produced in the UK every year?
It contains toxic substances, produces greenhouse gases and costs
substantial amounts of money to dispose of.
With this in mind COMMUNITY
BUSINESS
launched a recycling initiative for computer equipment which combines computer
training for local people. This
initiative is known as SECOND
BYTE
which obtains redundant and second hand computer equipment from local industry,
and then sells the refurbished and upgraded equipment onto educational
establishments, community groups, charities and other worthy organisations at
low cost. The computer maintenance
and repair programme, also FREE, is based around a timescale of twenty weeks,
five days per week and is accredited by City and Guilds.
